The story of how I started my Jack Daniel’s TM collection and how much my first bottle is worth today!

Hi, my name is Linas and I am a dedicated collector. Since I was a kid, I always had a passion for collecting - whether it has been coins, matchboxes, beer mats, drinks cans, or post stamps.

My first encounter with Jack Daniel’s ™ happened around 20 years ago when my dear friend Vidar introduced me to Old No.7 ™ and his favourite drink - Jack Daniel’s ™ & Coke ™. This iconic cocktail has been a part of countless laughter and fun filled evenings with friends and family since! Whenever I went to visit Vidar, who lives in Norway, I would buy a bottle of Old No.7 ™ at the airport Duty Free shops.

On one of these trips in 2008, I noticed a different kind of Jack Daniel’s ™ bottle at the airport shop. The shape and size of the bottle was the same but front label was new for me so I bought and brought it back home. I paid 325 Norwegian Krone’s which was about £30.  After some research I found that the bottle was JD Scenes from Lynchburg ™ No.8 (SFL). What I didn’t know at the time was that this bottle was the beginning of something really big (and expensive 😊)! What I also didn’t appreciate at that time - that all these limited edition or special release bottles would go up in price once they have been discontinued and were sold out. It turned out - whiskey can be a very good investment. My first bottle is worth around £230 today!

My first ever JD bottle

My first ever Jack Daniel’s ™ bottle, 2008

Over the following few years, I bought and preserved bottles of Scenes from Lynchburg ™ No.9,10 and 11 as these were part of 12 bottle series which Jack Daniel’s ™ released annually. Before 2008, I only knew Old No.7 ™ bottle and simply did not appreciate that other bottles existed. Thereafter, I became obsessed with researching the brand and looking for rarer and more collectable Jack Daniel’s ™ bottles. I would always find some new and interesting ones at the airports while travelling: Jack Daniels’ Single Barrel ™, 1st release of Jack Daniel’s Silver Select ™, Gentleman Jack ™ etc.

After my collection started to grew – to my surprise – I found out I wasn’t alone in this crazy collecting journey. I discovered many more Jack Daniel’s ™ collectors around the world. I started to get in touch with them over social media, I would go to Jack Daniel’s ™ collectors’ meetings where trades and sales take place. I was buying and trading my spare bottles left and right whilst new products would keep coming home with me.

New additions after collectors’ meeting, 2013

It appeared a perfect hobby – well, for me at least 😊. My wife Ausra was much less enthusiastic (mildly said) about it. The lack of space in our one bedroom flat and financial burden caused a loss of a lot of peaceful nights in our marriage 😊. I learned that not necessarily telling her the true price or keeping some of the new bottles out of her sight for a while was a good idea (tip for new collectors 😊). By 2014, I already had four glass cabinets full of Jack Daniel’s ™ bottles and I was very proud of it!
